Rain-fed wheat is unforgiving about timing. In the Pothohar belt, the difference between a good crop and a disappointing one is usually decided before the seed goes in the ground.
Here is the thing about barani wheat. You cannot irrigate your way out of a mistake. Whatever moisture is in the profile at sowing is most of what the crop will get. So the preparation matters more than it does on an irrigated field, and the mistakes are harder to correct later.
1. Know your stored moisture before you commit
Dig down. Not a scrape, a proper hole to root depth. If the soil crumbles dry at 15 to 20 centimetres, sowing into it is a gamble regardless of what the calendar says. Most of the time in our experience, growers who wait a few days for a settling rain do better than growers who sow on a fixed date into dry ground.
2. Sow within the window your district actually has
Barani districts generally have a narrower sowing window than irrigated ones. Late sowing pushes grain filling into warmer weather, and heat during grain filling is one of the more reliable ways to lose yield in Pakistan now. Sowing windows vary by district and by variety, so confirm yours with your Agriculture Extension office rather than copying a neighbour in a different rainfall zone.
3. Match the variety to rainfall, not to reputation
A variety that performs well under irrigation will not necessarily perform under 400 to 600 millimetres of rain. Ask specifically for varieties recommended for barani conditions in your district, and prefer drought and heat tolerance over headline yield potential. Honestly, this is where we see the most avoidable loss. A high-input variety on a low-water field wastes both.
4. Get the seed rate right for your row spacing
Seed rate and row spacing work together. A rate that suits a broadcast crop is usually wrong for a drill, and drilling into moisture at a controlled depth generally gives better establishment than broadcasting. If you are using a drill for the first time, check the calibration on a measured strip before you commit the whole field.
5. Base fertiliser on a soil test, not on habit
Most fields we test come back needing less nitrogen and more phosphorus than the grower was applying, and a fair number are short of zinc. Applying a standard bag rate across a whole farm means some fields are overfed and others starved, and you pay for both. A soil test costs a fraction of a season of misapplied fertiliser.
What this adds up to
None of these five steps is expensive. Together they usually move a barani wheat crop more than any single input you can buy. It is more complicated than it sounds, and no two fields behave identically, but the order of priority holds: moisture, timing, variety, establishment, then nutrition.
